Greets Cubes,

Tonight I was wandering around the area of Broadway and 14th in New York, looking to waste some time before a meeting, and came across Forbidden Planet, a store selling comic books, games, toys, etc… Being a sucker for all things escapist, I decided to check it out.

I was greeted at the door by the minion on staff, I nodded and smiled. And then, in all the time that I’ve been carrying a “man-bag”, or “murse” as I like to call it, something very surprising happened…

Him: “Would you mind leaving your bag here at the front?”
Me: “Would you ask a woman to hand over her purse?”
Him: “A bit of a double standard, I know, but that’s the policy.”
Me: “Thanks, have a good night.”

And I walked out. I could not believe that, because I was not female, my personal bag was requested to be handed over… at a comic book store!!!

So that’s it. I’m never setting foot in Forbidden Planet ever again. I’ve been in a lot of stores in New York, many boasting wares much more expensive than anything that could possibly have been present in Forbidden Planet, and never has anyone ever requested me to turn over my bag. And it’s not like I am some scummy-looking character or kid that may try a grab-and-dash. I’m a reasonably well dressed middle-aged man… well, at least that’s what the immersive reality tech that feeds my senses tells me.

Big time fail Forbidden Planet.

Greetings fellow cubes,

This cube has been re-tasked in an official capacity, and has been relocated from Sector 3 to another sector. Connectivity here is rather sporadic, so despite this cube’s increase in free cycles, until this cube’s service request for increased connectivity is answered, updates will not be as frequent.

The good news is that this sector contains a lot of other cubes. Perfect! Networking possibilities abound!

In the meantime, this cube has some ideas for an interesting tale. This cube intends to start working on it this week, and hopefully the tale will begin to be told by the end of the week.

Keep Processing, fellow cubes, and this cube will be in contact soon.

Greetings Cubes,

I (unfortunately) decided to watch The Last Sect last night on Space. It has David Carradine in it, so I thought I’d take a chance on it. Seems I rolled the bones and came up snake eyes. Continue reading ‘“The Last Sect” Sucked’ »

This cube finished Robert A. Heinlein’s Starship Troopers a few cycles back, and was surprised by how different it was from the version on the Big Frame Buffer. Continue reading ‘Heinlein’s Starship Troopers’ »

This cube spent some time reading Stephen King’s Under The Dome recently. Big, heavy hard cover. Luckily, big type, seeing as it is just a little shy of 1100 pages.

As usual, Mr. King does a great job of character development, you really get to know all the characters in the book… and there’s a lot of characters. An entire small town, actually. This cube found it spent a lot of processing power on trying to keep the various characters’ backstory straight.

This cube was somewhat disappointed, however, when it got to the climax and realized what it was all about. This cube will not ruin the surprise, you find out for yourself, but will leave you with this nugget; this book does not stand up to The Dark Tower series or The Stand, nor to Insomnia or other selections of Mr. King’s sizable collection of work.

Begin reading this book with no expectations and you will enjoy it. If you approach it expecting to be wowed by another of Mr. King’s masterpieces, you will be disappointed.

This sounds very promising. After 31 years, and claiming he’d never do an Alien sequel, Ridley Scott has decided it’s now time to revisit the universe of the original Alien film and tell the story humanity’s first steps into the galaxy. Oh, and the story of who that giant alien in the crashed ship in the first movie was… Check out the interview on MTV.

Greetings Cubes,

This unit has been offline due to a higher than normal load, and hosting issues. Both of these problems have been resolved.

So in the near future, this cube will begin telling tales of a future Earth, other worlds and intelligences… The Overseers will probably not be amused.

Keep an eye on this space…

I can not wait for this to finally come online…

Thanks to io9 for the heads-up.

It is no secret that this cube likes swords, I have several. I even have one of these.

That being said, I really like the look of these. They don’t make any sound, but they look phenomenal! And they blades are removable. It should be noted that they are not licensed Star Wars merchandise, but they are very cool. I think that one day, when I have the extra credits, I’ll get myself The Rogue.

Greetings Cubes,

Well, for the last little while The Overseers have kept this cube somewhat occupied. Much “hurry-up-and-wait” and “are you done yet?” Maddening. Why can’t they just load up the job queue and let me churn through? So in those moments of forced wait, I spend a good deal of my cycles in escapism. I like to consider alternate realities of my own creation. They’re far more interesting than my surroundings! Continue reading ‘Escapism’ »
